The OEMs in the imaging industry do what they can to hold remanufacturers back. The remanufactured ink cartridge is quickly becoming the standard printer consumable for offices and imaging professionals alike. Over the years, the remanufacturing industry has faced threats of lawsuits, scare tactics involving printer warranties, and one major pain: the smart chip.

While smart chips are awesome in theory, they are a bit of a hurdle to the refilling process. What they do is keep track of the ink level in the cartridge and cause it to stop working or send an error message when it reaches the right level. It's great in the sense that it lets you know when your cartridge is running low, but it makes the cartridge behave strangely after it has been refilled. This is another attempt at monopolization, and it is sad because it is a disservice to the consumer.
